6 World Famous Landscapes That Can Be Found in Hong Kong

When people think of Hong Kong, they think of a bustling city and towering skyscrapers, but a little known fact about Hong Kong is that it is three-quarters countryside, and has some of the most stunning landscapes that resemble some of the most iconic spots across the globe!

Read on to discover these hidden gems.

Ginormous Caves

Lantau's One Tree Cave, tucked away on the side of Lantau Peak (pictured right), requires a bit more of a scramble to get to than the natural limestone rock that is Thor's Cave in the Staffordshire Moorlands of the Peak District. This remote cave overlooks the North of Lantau and should only be attempted by intrepid hikers as it requires exploring off the beaten path. To see more caves Hong Kong has to offer, read our article here!

Hexagonal Rock Columns

You hear so much about the stunning hexagonal rocks of Ireland's Giant's Causeway (pictured left), Scotland's Fingal's Cave or even Iceland's Basalt stones, but the truth is, the 140-million-year-old volcanic rock formations you find out in Sai Kung are just as impressive. Head out to any of the Ninepin Islands, High Island East Dam or Po Pin Chau to get a close up look of the geological marvels.

Elephant Trunk Caves

Would you believe we also have an Elephant Trunk Cave on the South of Sharp Island in Sai Kung (pictured right) which rivals the Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin? Both rock formations get it's name from its similar appearance to an elephant taking getting a drink of water at the water's edge.

Fish-shaped Island

It's one thing to have similar looking caves, but two islands shaped like a fish? In our opinion, Hong Kong's Tiu Chung Chau (also known as Jin Island) out in Sai Kung easily surpasses Croatia's fish-shaped Gaz Island! With crystal clear waters, rugged terrain and a stunning arch hidden beneath "the tail" of the goldfish, this is one island you won't want to miss exploring!

Rocky Canyons

Although nothing could ever possibly come close to to THE Grand Canyon, Hong Kong has it's own version of the "grand canyon" in the form of Pineapple Mountain out in Caste Peak. Albeit less grand, the terrain is still nonetheless, a unique and peculiar spot to explore all the same!

Spectacular Rock Pools

Hong Kong could give some of Sydney's rock pools a run for their money, with some stunning hidden gems dotted throughout the territory. Take Sharp Island's hidden heart-shaped rock pool as an example or the natural rock pool tucked away along the side of Ap Lei Pai. The rock pools situated on the beach of Kau Sai Wan (pictured right) also make for a refreshing and relaxing way to beat the summer heat with your pup!
