Our top 5 dog-friendly spots to explore in Portofino

Oh Portofino! This was a highlight on Global Paws' Euro trip as the area is exceptionally dog-friendly, with stunning views, and famous cliffside villas and hotels. The boat journey to Portofino takes around 30 minutes from Santa Margherita Ligure, where you will easily find street parking, making these top five dog-friendly activities a breeze!

1) Portofino Harbour (Marina di Portofino)

Whether you've chartered a private boat or decided to take the ferry to Portofino, you will be docking at Marina di Portofino - the town's harbour and a hive of activity, especially in the summer months.

Along here you will find many boutiques, galleries and restaurants, so take a stroll, do some shopping and explore the coastline!

Lunch at La Gritta, a floating alfresco restaurant on the harbour.  The atmosphere and view  is stunning with colourful houses and turquoise water.  The water is so clear you can even see tropical fish swimming right next to your table.

For one of the best gelatos in all of Northern Italy, head over to Gelateria Gepi Portofino.

Yes, it's a bit pricey but totally worth it.

2) Castello Brown

Take a wander up to Castle Brown overlooking the region. It’s one of the best things to do in Portofino if you want to stretch your legs.  The castle dates back almost 500 years and is well worth the climb uphill and along narrow stairs through the castle to the viewpoint to get a panoramic view of the region. The walk is just as gorgeous as the castle itself.

3 )Al Faro di Portofino - Lounge Bar

Whilst on your walk through Castello Brown, be sure to stop off at the old lighthouse which has been converted to a cliffside bar, La Portofinese. Here you are guaranteed some delicious cocktails and breathtaking views.

4) Baia Cannone

Baia Cannone is one of the most iconic beaches in the Italian Riviera, although it is not actually dog-friendly, there are no life guards to mandate this and people are generally quite welcoming of dogs. Here you will be able to see the famous Piccolo Hotel in the background where movie stars are often spotted.

5) Bau Bau Beach

For a dog-friendly beach option you can try Bau Bau Beach, located in between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. You can park near the beach on the side of the street, and will find many other dogs on the beach to play with.
