Since the loss of 2G networks in Hong Kong last November, many Hong Kong users of the leading Pet GPS Tracker, Tractive, claimed their devices had stopped working (apart from a select few who might have gotten their devices in the latter part of last year).

This left many pet owners in Hong Kong scrambling to find a new tracker for their dog’s adventures.

To save you the headache of trying to find the right GPS pet tracker for your dog, we’ve done an analysis on the available options in Hong Kong, against the once popular Tractive, so you can make an informed decision on the best tracker for your adventures.

New bark monitoring.

Things we loved 👍

Battery life and coverage is pretty solid, even in areas of low network coverage.

Fairly social - can add friends’ devices and make them “visible” on your Map.

"Strava for pups" - can record hikes and playback on your Map History.

App sends notifications when the device is low on battery and needs charging.

Sturdy collar attachment is secure.

Long battery life. Ability to use 2G and 4G networks. Only tracking device we've come across that provides nutrition monitoring.

Secure collar/harness slide-on design thinner than the Pawfit device and less buttons.

“Community-driven” to help find a lost pet - but requires more users in your area. Full lifetime warranty: free replacement of all lost or damaged products purchased with a warranty.

The social features added a nice little competitive edge amongst other users and friends.

The Tractive Care package covers the replacement of lost devices - all you need to do is cover postage costs.

Can connect to your Strava app so you can track the walk for both you and your pup!

Things we didn’t like 👎

Device’s screen and edges of the older device can be damaged fairly easily, especially in more active pups, who may like to play rough. They do sell a protective case but this doesn’t prevent the cracks completely.

Their new model's design (Pawfit Lite) however, may be slightly better.

No real-time tracking available even in “Lost Pet mode,” there is a lag, which is disappointing considering it can switch between 2G and 4G networks. The newer models (G20 Pro GPS tracker & G20-Pro HK) are all sold out. Available in Chinese only.

No global network coverage - limited to coverage in Hong Kong only.

Live Tracking is slow - The loading time to update their location is really slow. The device either had no signal or would be slow to update the pet's location, even though phones still had service.

Often logs you out of the app so each time you click in you have to re-enter your login username and password which is a real time-waster during an emergency!

“Community” isn’t very fun or engaging - mostly for being notified about lost pets in your neighborhood radius.

“Treats/ Services” section not connected to HK local brands, some links are dead.

No activity monitoring, but will allow you to track your dog’s previous walks up to a year prior.

Not only is there a lack of coverage in Hong Kong, but Tractive doesn't seem to be in any hurry to resolve this issue, nor do they deliver directly to Hong Kong. The battery life in the Dog 6 model is not great - even worse now that 2G networks are down in Hong Kong.

These days, the Dog 6 battery life lasts less than 1 day in areas of low network coverage (i.e. out on the trails). Dog 6 is their only model suitable for smaller to medium sized dogs.

Overall Score

4/5

2/5

2/5

3/5 Would be higher if they sorted out their network coverage issues and delivered to Hong Kong.

Why Invest in a GPS Tracker for Your Pet?

Although having an AirTag is better than not having any form of tracking on your pet, these devices were not designed to track pets and also pose a danger to your dogs as they contain a battery which could mean a medical emergency, should your dog accidentally ingest this.

This might sound far-fetched, but the screw design makes it easy for active pups to shake apart the battery and the device frame, and happens more times than you think. Just read this Wall Street Journal article.

If that's not enough to deter you from using the AirTag on your pets, the device has very limited tracking capabilities and needs a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the "Find My" network to work. What does that mean? No iPhones, no signal, no tracking. In other words, it's just no good.

A pet GPS tracker can give you peace of mind on your adventures and tap into local networks to track your dog, as that's what they were designed to do! Don't think of it as another cost, but rather an investment that can save you and your dog a lot of trouble in emergencies. Plus, the additional features such as sleep and health monitoring (depending on which model you decide on) are great tools to keep track of your pet's health and well-being, which is priceless.

So, which model is the right fit for you?

Disclaimer: It's important to note that technology is not without it's faults and although investing in a pet GPS tracker is the smart choice, one should not solely rely on GPS trackers when it comes to the safety of their pets.
